Panasonic RX D55: specifications and reviews. Dimensions, weight, color

The miniaturization trend for mobile handsets now seems to be at its peak. Almost all manufacturers produce tubes that fit in any pocket or handbag. The Panasonic GD55 falls into this category. So it will be interesting to know if this device has become less functional than its "larger" counterparts with a decrease in size.

The body size of the device is only 77×43×16.9 mm, which puts it on a par with such "little ones" as Siemens CL50, Sony Ericsson T600 and VK Mobile VG107. The phone will easily fit into any pocket of trousers or jacket. We can say that the size of the GD55 has already come close to the border, after which the use of the phone by a person with a medium-sized palm will be difficult. The device weighs only 65 grams. There are three different colors of the case: silver, pink and red (although now only the first option can really be found on the shelves).

User interface and display. The 112×64 pixel monochrome display used in the GD55 is capable of displaying up to 4 lines. It leaves a very pleasant impression due to its width and very nice blue backlighting (by the way, the keyboard is backlit in the same color). When the home screen is shown, the top line of the display is used to provide information about the reception level and battery charge. The bottom line in the normal mode is used to display labels for soft keys.

The phone's menu system resembles most of the menus found in other Panasonic GD series phones, although the navigation is two-way (only up and down).

To speed up access to frequently used functions, their “shortcuts” can be “glued” to the keyboard keys, and then you don’t have to go into the menu, but just press the desired key.

The standard information displayed on the phone (network name, date and time) can be replaced with one of the pictures available in the phone. Despite the fact that the display is not color, it will give the phone at least some personality.

Connection. Like all Panasonic phones, the GD55 is equipped with a hands-free headset jack. The sound quality is good, the sound is quite loud both when playing through a hands-free headset and during a normal conversation. The signal sensitivity is satisfactory. The phone's microphone is very sensitive, you can talk even at a short distance from the phone.

Message passing. This is not to say that it is completely impossible to write a message on this phone, but there may be some difficulties getting used to the small keys, which are located at a very small distance from each other and protrude just a little above the body of the device. When typing, it is best to use only your fingertips.

The T9 predictive messaging system used in this phone is the most common of these systems and does not need any special comments. The only thing is that the manufacturers say that they have slightly changed the algorithm of this system and advise everyone, even those who are previously familiar with it, to read the manual for its use again.

Two message types are supported: SMS and EMS. The length of the sent message is limited to 160 characters. EMS messages can be used to send formatted text, as well as static pictures and animations.

Keyboard. The keys on the keyboard are so small that they must be pressed with your fingertips, and the distance between the buttons is less than on the average phone keyboard, so there is a danger of making mistakes and hitting the wrong key when speed dialing.

In addition, there are some problems with the keyboard of a different kind. If the gap between presses is too small, then the keyboard may not perceive pressing one of the buttons. This can manifest itself, for example, when typing SMS.

Another feature is that pressing a key causes a beep, regardless of whether Keyboard Lock is enabled or not. This looks rather strange.

Battery. The phone comes with a 720 mAh lithium-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, the phone works up to 230 hours in standby mode and up to 7-9 hours in talk mode. In practice, the device's talk time is just over 4 hours, and with not very intensive use, the battery does not require recharging for 3-4 days. These indicators are very good and deserve only praise.

Sound. Melodies in the device, despite its size, are very loud, which, to be honest, surprised us a lot. You can use 30 preset melodies and sounds. Also, using the built-in program Melody Composer, you can compose melodies yourself. In total, the phone allows you to have up to 5 user ringtones.

Organizer. The telephone book of the device allows you to record up to 250 numbers. You can use the memory of your phone and SIM card at the same time. The phonebook supports all standard features, such as selecting a number when sending messages, extracting and storing the sender's number in the phonebook, and displaying the caller's number or name as the message header. The division of subscribers into groups is supported. There is also a calculator, and a currency converter, and an organizer, and a calendar, and a counter of time / cost of calls.

Conclusion. The main advantage of the GD55 is undoubtedly its size. Despite its small size, the phone has a fairly comfortable keypad and a fairly large display. Functionally, the phone is also quite well equipped. But while working with it, some problems arose that make it impossible to give the phone an “excellent” mark. This is the lack of normal synchronization with the PC, and problems with the keyboard, and unnecessary voicing of keys in Lock mode.

When thinking about alternatives, it should be remembered that they do not have any significant advantages over GD55. Sony Ericsson is good only because of the lack of an external antenna, good games and the fact that it is Sony Ericsson.

In the age of digital media, all kinds of CDs, the Internet and all kinds of gadgets, analog media have faded into the background. But they didn't really die. There are still those who appreciate the "warm, tube", analog sound. Vivid proof of this is the return to fashion of vinyl players, which now cost a fortune. But what about cassettes? Of course, the sound on these media is not as high quality as on vinyl, but they also have their fans. Along with the era of cassettes, multifunctional devices for playing them (tape recorders and decks) have sunk into oblivion. However, there are some signs that cassettes will soon return. Proof of this is the release of the Panasonic RX-D55 radio. And this is in 2014! Consider this versatile device in more detail.

A little about the company

This company was founded back in 1919. True, then it was called differently. But this does not detract from her venerable age. Throughout its history, the manufacturer has been engaged in the production of specialized production equipment, all kinds of electronics (including household), the production of mobile phones, cameras, players and the production of many other goods. Made in Japan were especially appreciated. Then the label of this company was considered synonymous with the highest quality products. And now nothing has changed. Proof of this is the Panasonuc RX-D55 radio recorder. But more on that later.

Around the eighties of the last century, the company mastered the production of multifunctional sound "combines", which included a CD player, radio and cassette deck. Such devices have become very popular among potential buyers. Therefore, the company decided to expand the line of popular products. But many years have passed since then. What made Panasonic release a cassette recorder in our time? Nobody knows. But the Panasonic RX-D55 EE K has become a real bestseller. Now let's look at it in more detail.

Contents of delivery

So, Panasonic RX-D55 comes in a colored cardboard box. Inside - all the necessary papers, the radio itself, a remote control (by the way, rather big), a wire for connecting to the electrical network and batteries in order for the clock to work. You should not expect more from such a product. This is still not a high-tech gadget, but a kind of "hello from the nineties." Therefore, you will not find anything supernatural in the package. But that's for the best. Brevity is the soul of wit.

Nevertheless, the presence of batteries and a remote control is incredibly pleasing. There is one more feature in the Panasonic RX-D55 package - the instruction manual is completely in Russian. Although in the case of TM "Panasonic" there is nothing surprising in this. In addition to the instructions, there is also a warranty card. The product warranty is one year. This is quite enough for such a device.

Appearance and design

The Panasonic RX-D55 looks like a regular tape recorder from the nineties. This similarity is exacerbated by the presence of a cassette deck on the top panel. There are several color options: black and silver. Which one is better and more practical is up to the buyer to choose. But both options are made of durable high-quality plastic. The front panel houses the LCD, CD tray, control buttons and all the necessary ports. This location of the CD player is very convenient, as it eliminates the possibility of damage to the disc.

On the back of the Panasonic RX-D55 is a battery compartment, a headphone jack and various ventilation grilles. The power cord also plugs in at the back. The advantage of this radio is also its weight. This immediately indicates that we have a high-quality and solid product. However, the design is a bit archaic. In any case, in 2017 it looks like a blatant anachronism. But the main thing is not the appearance. It is much more important that it sounds. Let's move on to its functions.

Radio functions

So, what features can Panasonic RX-D55 please us with? We will not touch the characteristics yet. The device has a cassette player with auto-stop, fast rewind and search for the desired song. It provides playback of any magnetic cassette (even the most worn one). Also in the radio there is a radio receiver with a memory for 16 stations, operating in the FM-AM bands. Everything would be very nice if there was also support for RDS - text information sent by radio stations. Also in the radio there is an alarm clock function, which can be set using the remote control.

Below the LCD is a CD player. It is capable of playing MP3, WAV, WMA, CD-AUDIO formats. Pretty good set for the radio, made in the style of the nineties. But that's not all. Panasonic RX-D55 is equipped with a USB port, which makes it possible to play music from a conventional flash drive. Song tags are also supported. And the radio can also be used as an amplifier with speakers for a laptop, PC or mobile phone. For this there is a special output on the front panel, which is called the Music Port.

Specifications

Now let's move on to the most interesting - the technical characteristics of the Panasonic RX-D55 radio. The speaker design uses ceramic cones, which should provide the highest sound quality. And this, judging by the reviews, is true. The total power of the audio system is 20 watts. It turns out that one column accounts for about 10 watts. A high quality reader from Panasonic is used as the magnetic "head" of the cassette player. The CD player laser is also produced by this company.

The radio is equipped with two-way speakers with a diameter of 80 millimeters. This provides a fairly high-quality sound. Which is quite good, if you remember the cost of this tape recorder. The Panasonic RX-D55 radio tape recorder, reviews of which we will discuss a little later, supports CD-R and CD-RW standard discs. DVD support is not provided. And this is good, because otherwise the device would be much heavier and larger. So his absence is only a plus.

Sound quality

So what does the Panasonic RX-D55 sound like? According to the owners, it is simply gorgeous. Especially when playing high-quality branded CDs. However, in order for the radio to "sound", you need to make some manipulations. The radio has a built-in equalizer, which must be adjusted to ensure high sound quality. There is also a virtual stereo expansion button. And it really works! After pressing this key, the sound quality is noticeably leveled. In addition, there is volume.

Thanks to high-quality ceramic cone drivers, the sound is much better than you could imagine. Even the playback of magnetic cassettes is very high quality. Although such a sound is a hallmark of products from Panasonic. This has long been known to everyone, so their products are well-deserved popularity. Especially if it was collected in Japan. Then these devices are priceless.

Positive reviews

Studying the reviews left by the owners of these devices helps to understand how the gadget works in real conditions, find out its strengths and weaknesses, and decide whether it is worth buying at all. As for our hero, many compose laudatory odes to this device. They note high sound quality, convenient and understandable settings, a multifunctional remote control. Fans of analog sound are delighted with the quality of cassette playback. Also, many are pleased with the price of the device and the opportunity to receive the Panasonic RX-D55 by mail. This makes this device very attractive to many music lovers.

Many users comment on the Panasonic RX-D55's superior workmanship and overall quality of materials. Everything is adjusted to the millimeter. Nothing creaks, cracks or falls off anywhere. This is a sign of a quality product. In general, there are much more positive reviews about this device than negative ones. And Panasonic doesn't have it any other way. However, let's now consider the reviews of the dissatisfied. They are. They cannot be. So...

Negative Feedback

Those who leave dissatisfied comments want something more from a product like an all-in-one cassette player. Yes, there are many alternatives on the market now, but they are all much more expensive. So let's not look into the mouth of an almost gift horse. From constructive criticism, it should be noted that the cassette deck does not open in the Panasonic RX-D55. Sometimes. Apparently there was a factory defect. It's all about the latches here. You need to physically open it, clean the latches and try again. Also, many lament that the batteries needed for battery operation are small, which negatively affects battery life. But with other batteries, the device would become many times heavier. The designers felt that it would be better. These are the main disadvantages of the radio. Otherwise, she's all right.

Conclusion

Universal radio Panasonic RX-D55 has the ability to play music from magnetic and USB-drive. The device also includes a radio receiver. Based on the "price - quality" ratio, this model is the best on the modern market of universal music players. The sound is great as well.

Initially, Panasonic did not intend to supply this model to the European market, but later plans changed. Already in the spring, official deliveries will begin in Europe, including Russia. The uniqueness of this phone is that it is the smallest tri-band GSM-standard device. However, judge for yourself, the dimensions of the phone are 77 x 43 x 16.9 mm and the weight is 65 grams. The phone sinks in the hand, and it is easy to carry it both in a shirt pocket and in jeans, the dimensions allow it. Currently available in three colors - silver, red and pink. It is still unclear whether all three colors will be delivered to Europe, but based on user preferences, silver will most likely be the main color here.

The keypad of the phone is made of matte plastic, the symbols on the keys are quite small, however, they are visible in various conditions. The keys are closely spaced, rather small, but there is no discomfort when working with them. When pressed, the finger sometimes touches the neighboring keys, but there is no discomfort from this. The key travel is relatively tight, you feel every press, which is good for touch typing. Judging by the size of the device, one could expect some inconvenience from the keyboard, but fortunately, this is not the case. Under the screen, in addition to soft keys, there is also a vertical navigation key, it is very comfortable. The backlighting of the keyboard is blue, to match the screen.

The phone's screen is also small, in standby mode it displays two lines of information (date, time, operator), a line of icons at the top, as well as labels for soft keys. Despite the small physical size of the display in the SMS reading mode, you see 4 lines of text and labels for soft keys, this is more than enough. In fairness, it should be noted that most menu items still show three lines of text and a service line. Information on the screen is read well in various conditions, the blue backlight goes out and lights up gradually, it looks nice.

At the bottom you can see the charger connector, it differs from those on other Panasonic models. This fact allows us to judge that the GD55 is built on a fundamentally different platform. On the right side surface there is a standard connector for connecting a headset. There is a strap hole on the top end.

On the back surface you can see the speaker hole, next to it you can see the protruding part of the antenna. If you put the phone on the table, then the base of the antenna will raise its upper part above the surface, this is done so that the speaker works better in hands-free mode. We saw a similar design in previous models from Panasonic.

The battery is at the same time the back wall of the phone, you need to make a little effort so that it fits snugly into place until it clicks. Sometimes the battery does not lock into the slot, it seems to you that it has fallen into place, in reality, it is not. The only advice is to initially look at how the lid snaps into place. This feature does not create any particular inconvenience, it is enough to show a little attention.

The accumulator - lithium-ion with a capacity of 720 mAh. According to the manufacturer, it provides the phone with up to 230 hours of standby time and up to 7 hours of talk time. Tests in the conditions of the Czech network showed that the device works for 5 days with 55 minutes of calls and minimal use of other functions (only an alarm clock and a few short messages). The indicator for such a small phone is very good, not all devices can boast of such an operating time. The time to fully charge the battery is a little less than an hour and a half.

Menu

The menu organization is typical for Panasonic phones. So, in the main menu you see three rows of icons, each item corresponds to a number, however, just like individual sub-items. With the help of number sequences, you can quickly select the desired menu item. The lack of a joystick is not noticed, since when you enter the menu, the central icon is highlighted, the keypad is locked, as in older models. With it, you can quickly go to any menu item using the navigation key. The menu is organized in such a way that the furthest away are items that are rarely used or for which there is a shortcut key from the standby mode. All this allows us to call the menu very thoughtful. Additionally, in the standby mode, pressing the vertical key calls up the user's menu, you yourself can compose it from an arbitrary number of items, just mark the ones you need in the list. Looking ahead, I note that the Russian version of the device has not only a Russified menu, but also Russian text input (T9 dictionary for the Russian language is not yet supported).

Phone book. Up to 250 numbers can be stored in the phone's memory, only one number can be stored per name. Only one type of memory is displayed in the list of numbers at a time, they cannot be combined. For numbers in the phone memory, you can select a group of subscribers (each group is assigned its own ringtone). In addition, individual ringtones can be assigned to individual entries (up to 10 numbers). The list of names can be searched by the first letter of the name.

Messages. There is no space for short messages in the phone memory, only the SIM card memory is available. However, the phone has 10 pre-installed message templates, as well as 5 empty slots for them. The phone supports the EMS standard, it has a small set of funny pictures with the expression of various feelings.

A game. There is only one game in the phone, in it you need to have time to press a key to hit the mouse peeking out of the hole, and there are exactly 9 of them. The game quickly becomes boring, it's hard to kill time with it.

Personification. In GD55, for the first time for Panasonic phones, profiles appeared, now you can set not only the ringer option (sound, only vibration or sound and vibration), but also the operation of the screen backlight, warning tones, etc. A quick call to profiles from the standby mode is carried out by long pressing the left soft key.

From the same menu, you can call the melody editor, it supports up to 4 tracks, in total it is possible to record up to 5 melodies. Finally, this menu hides the screen contrast setting, the choice of a screen saver for the standby mode.

Browser. Actually wap-browser, everything works and there is nothing special to talk about.

phone menu. The phone menu hides the choice of the range in which the phone can operate, unfortunately, there is no automatic selection of the 1900 band, you will need to activate it in roaming from this menu. Other settings here are related to the choice of preferred networks.

Applications. From this menu, you can call a calculator, currency converter. Both functions are implemented elegantly, they are convenient to use.

In the schedule, you can enter 2 types of events, this is a meeting or a memo, in total the phone stores up to 100 entries. There is a view of events for the day, but there is no view of all memos, this is inconvenient. The calendar is displayed for a month, while two lines with numbers are visible on the screen, there are displays by weeks, then for the selected day the first event is shown in the line. In general, the organizer is not very convenient to use, it is rather an additional feature that most owners of this model will not use.

Watch. In addition to time and date settings, you can set a one-time or recurring alarm, and specify a time to turn off your phone automatically.

Challenges. The phone stores up to 20 records of dialed numbers and 10 records of received or missed calls. It is curious that the time and date of the call is indicated only for records of received or missed calls, in some ways this is logical. You can call up this list by long pressing the right soft key from standby mode.

Impression

In terms of connection quality, this phone is in no way inferior to its big brothers, it works very well. The volume of the speaker is such that sometimes you have to turn it down. The presence of a built-in speakerphone is more a tribute to fashion than a real need. Realization of this function is worse compared to other devices from Panasonic, because the loudspeaker volume is obviously not enough. The advantages include 4-tone polyphony, it is pleasant, the melodies are well audible, although sometimes they seem too piercing. The vibrating alert is average in strength, but it is felt, which makes it possible not to miss calls in a noisy environment.

The dimensions of the phone did not affect the ergonomics, the keys are easy to use, although the device sinks in the hand, it conveys your voice well to the interlocutor. With few features, the phone has no noticeable software issues, everything works as it should. The absence of any advanced features is not an obstacle to its acquisition, since there is a whole class of users who only need the ability to make calls from the phone. They are also sensitive to the appearance of the device, and this little one, of course, attracts the eye. In addition to the implementation of profiles, for the first time a phone from Panasonic works for a very long time, 5 days in normal talk mode, which is a lot.

This phone's competitor is the Sony Ericsson T600, which has a slightly larger screen, a slightly larger size and slightly more features. Oddly enough, but after testing this device, I personally tend to conclude that this model was developed by the same people and on the same platform as the Siemens CL50. This can be judged by the similarity of technical characteristics and capabilities, the differences relate not to the hardware, but to the software part.
