Landing and care

Landing

Apple and pear trees are planted in spring or autumn. A landing pit 100 cm wide and 60 cm deep is prepared in advance, 2-3 weeks before planting. Mix the soil taken out of the pit with superphosphate, ash, peat, humus. In the spring, add 200-300 g of nitrogen, in the fall - it is not necessary. Drive a stake into the center of the planting hole, which will protect the seedling from breaking, then pour a hill, press down, install the seedling, straighten the roots, water and cover with the prepared mixture. Pour again, up to 5 buckets of water. Form a rim. The root neck should be at ground level, and the grafting site 4-5 cm above ground level.

pruning

It is necessary to cut young seedlings in the spring, before bud break, at a height of 50-60 cm from ground level (for an annual seedling), cover the cut with garden pitch. Combine pruning with nitrogen fertilization. In the first half of summer, for timely growth and formation of leaves, it is necessary to water and loosen the soil well enough. In the second half of summer, loosening and watering should be stopped.

Care

To prevent burns, it is recommended to whitewash trees in autumn and early spring with garden whitewash.
To fight mice and hares, lay out poisoned baits, trample snow around trees, tie trunks with pine branches or other material. Spud young seedlings with snow.

If you are going to plant a garden on your site, you need, first of all, to determine which varieties of fruit plants will grow well and produce crops in your specific conditions. That is, choose zoned varieties - varieties that are best suited for growing in the local climate. They must have a set of qualities that allow them to successfully grow and bear fruit in these conditions.

For example, when selecting varieties of apple trees for the Urals, first of all, they pay attention to such characteristics as:

1. Frost resistance. The climate in the Urals is continental, with severe winters, no thaws, good snow cover. Here, a very necessary quality will be good frost resistance of wood and flower buds.

2. Drought resistance. There is little precipitation in the Ural region in summer, so undemanding to moisture will be a useful quality.

3. Non-susceptibility to scab disease. An important quality, since the defeat of apple trees by such a disease as scab seriously affects the quality of the fruit and the overall health of the tree and involves a large number of chemical treatments in the garden.

4. Early fruit ripening. Relevant for the northern regions of the Urals, for example, the Chelyabinsk region. Here, compared with other areas, the provision of plants with summer heat is the smallest. Late and large-fruited varieties simply do not have time to ripen and gain flavor.

  • small-fruited semi-cultivated varieties, especially in the northern parts of the Urals;
  • as well as winter-hardy large-fruited varieties, including in creeping form;
  • and natural weeping dwarfs.

Consider what breeders offer gardeners in the Urals. Selection of frost-resistant apple trees is carried out at the South Ural Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing and Potato Growing. A great contribution to the development of northern horticulture was made by the workers of the Sverdlovsk horticultural selection station. Through their efforts, the gardens of the northerners were replenished with the following wonderful varieties:

summer varieties

silver hoof

Probably one of the most famous varieties. The sweet taste of very juicy apples brought him popularity. They have a rather large weight for northern apples - just over 100 grams, elegant. They ripen by mid-August and can last up to two to three weeks. If you are late with the removal, then the apples, remaining on the tree, pour and become transparent. The disadvantage is the susceptibility of the variety to scab in wet years.

Another favorite of gardeners not only in the Urals, but also far beyond its borders. Such love was brought to this variety by yellow, sweet apples, which also often become liquid. As well as their late-summer ripening, high productivity and early onset of fruiting. The winter hardiness of the tree is simply amazing - it can withstand temperatures as low as -51 degrees!

Aroma of Uktus

Productive, winter-hardy variety with summer-ripening apples. Very beautiful fruits for lovers of sour apples. The tree has a comfortable crown that does not need to be artificially formed. Scab resistance is not its strong point.

Papyro-amber

Amber-colored, pouring apples of sweet taste will not leave anyone indifferent! They are quite large - 120-140 grams, have a pleasant aroma. They ripen in late summer and can be stored for about two months. Trees begin to bear fruit early and delight with a large harvest.

An excellent summer variety with immunity to scab. The trees are small and very winter-hardy, producing a large harvest of red-striped apples every year. Ripening occurs in mid-August. The taste of apples is sweet and sour, pleasant.

Country

Favorite variety of summer apples in the Urals. Its advantages, along with a good sweet and sour taste, productivity and early fruiting, include almost no susceptibility to scab. It can also be noted that apples of the Dachnaya variety are pale yellow in color, without integumentary coloring, and weigh about 100 grams.

bugler

Large, powerful trees of this variety practically do not suffer from scab. Orange-red apples hang with bright lights. They are medium in size, sweet and sour in taste, will appeal to lovers of crispy apples. Ripening period - after mid-August.

The fruits are large, up to 160 g, yellow, somewhat elongated, with a very pleasant sweet and sour taste, they ripen in September and can be consumed until March.

The fruits are harvested at the end of September, and they can lie until the next harvest.

Natural dwarf apple trees

The main differences from the usual apple tree:

  1. small stature: the height ranges from 1.2-1.5 to 2.7 m on a seed rootstock, and if such a variety is grafted onto a clonal dwarf rootstock, then it will rise only 1.2-2 m;
  2. flat-rounded crown, where the branches are located horizontally - the tree seems to spread along the ground;
  3. increased winter hardiness;
  4. the best pollinators are other varieties of dwarf apple trees;
  5. not simultaneous flowering on the upper and lower branches.

This winter variety was bred at the South Ural Research Institute of Fruit Growing. It looks like a completely dwarf tree: the height is only 2.7 m on a seed rootstock. Medium-sized apples, shiny, yellow, with a ruddy side, with pronounced ribbing. The taste is very good. Begins to bear fruit early. Yields are large, more than 100 kg per tree.

Autumn variety with rather large apples of wonderful sweet and sour taste. The height of the tree on the seed rootstock does not exceed 1.5 m.

Snowdrop

Winter variety. Apples are light with a slight blush, slightly elongated, ribbed. Very tasty, with juicy sweet and sour pulp. Stored up to four months.

wonderful

Light yellow with blush apples ripen in summer. They are quite large: about 130 grams, some specimens reach 200 grams, slightly ribbed, slightly flattened. Juicy, good taste. Winter hardiness is slightly lower than that of other dwarf apple trees.

The climatic conditions of the Urals are different in different areas of the region: in the northern part (Chelyabinsk region) there are especially cold winters and cool summers. To the south, in the Orenburg region and Bashkiria, winters are milder and summers are warmer. But, nevertheless, in general, the climate of the Urals is quite severe, with frosts in winter. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully choose varieties of apple trees, paying attention, first of all, to their adaptability to harsh climatic conditions.

In this article, we will list proven varieties of apple trees bred in the Sverdlovsk region, which have passed the test of time and have shown good results not only in the Middle Urals, but also in the Southern Urals and Central Russia, the Northern Volga region, and Siberia.

By their nature, the trees are dwarf, the crown has a flat-horizontal, drooping shape. On a seed rootstock, the height of an apple tree does not exceed 1.5 - 2 meters, and when using vegetatively propagated clonal rootstocks, the trees grow even lower - up to 1.2 - 1.5 meters. Apple trees bear fruit on all types of fruit wood, quite often on last year's growths.
The size of apples exceeds the average value, the weight of one fruit averages 150 - 170 g, but can reach 200 g or more. Fruits are flat-round in shape. The peel of apples is quite tender, to the touch - smooth, without roughness, slightly oily. The main color of apples is greenish-yellow, the integumentary color occupies more than half of the surface of the fruit in the form of a rich dark red blush.
The early maturity of the variety is high, fruiting of trees begins 3-4 years after grafting. The yield indicator reaches 60 kg of fruit per tree.

Beauty of Sverdlovsk

One of the most common varieties in the Urals. On good soil, with proper care, you can harvest a fairly large crop, even though the tree of this variety is very compact and low. If you want the yields to be stable, select the most secluded place on the site for the seedlings of Beauty of Sverdlovsk, protected from the piercing north wind. And then the grown trees will thank you with large cream-colored fruits with a perky blush. Sometimes (not every year) trees can be affected by scab.

Iset white

silver hoof

A summer variety of apple trees bred at the Sverdlovsk Experimental Horticulture Station by breeder Leonid Andrianovich Kotov.
Today it remains the leading variety in the Sverdlovsk, Kirov, Perm, Kurgan, Chelyabinsk, Orenburg and Udmurt regions. In addition, the Silver Hoof is propagated in fruit nurseries and cultivated at an active pace in other northern regions of our country, as well as in the northern part of Kazakhstan.
The trees are winter-hardy, exceptionally fast-growing (bearing fruit in the 3-4th year after planting), with restrained growth, a rounded crown. The fruits are rounded, weighing 80-100 g, attractive, with creamy, very juicy, dense pulp, very good sweet and sour taste. They ripen in mid-August, after picking they are stored for up to 2 months. With a delay in harvesting, the fruits are poured, become transparent and attractive in a new way.

The fruits are quite large, compactly located on a wide-pyramidal crown. The pulp will appeal to lovers of hard apples, it is dense, bites off in large pieces, juicy and crispy. Therefore, excellent clear juice without pulp is obtained from Ural pink apples. The variety has another very important advantage - it is not affected by apple scab.

Uralets

This variety has proven itself well and has already been tested by time. The trees do not freeze slightly and practically do not get sick. Medium-sized apples with a beautiful scarlet blush, very pleasant to the taste. The pulp of the fruit literally splashes with juice, so both lovers of fresh apples and those who like them better in a processed form will like the variety. The Uralets is good for everyone, but he also has a drawback - he can get sick with scab of an apple tree.

Blush Sverdlovsk

Another very popular variety in the Urals with heroic resistance to harsh frosts. The Sverdlovsk Rumyanka trees have a strong rounded crown, the fruits are quite large, ripen in medium time, they can be eaten fresh or processed. When the apple is fully ripe, pink stripes appear on its greenish-yellow sides. The variety has a high resistance to scab, which is undoubtedly an advantage.

The selection includes apple varieties for the Urals, immune to scab, bred at the Sverdlovsk breeding station for horticulture of the Russian Agricultural Academy. The author of all the apple varieties presented, as well as most varieties of fruit crops in the Urals, Leonid Andrianovich Kotov, leading researcher at the Sverdlovsk Horticulture Breeding Station, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Professor of the Ural Agricultural Academy. The first crosses using scab immunity donor apple trees were made by him in 1984.

It is known that just a few decades ago there were no orchards in the Urals, not even wild game grew, and all imported cultivars of apple trees froze. Now, for seedlings of Sverdlovsk (read: Kotovskaya) apple trees, selections come from other regions. Like all immune apple varieties, the immune varieties of Leonid Kotov have absolute resistance (immunity) to all five existing scab races. Created in the Middle Urals, they are highly winter-hardy, productive, with excellent taste and useful qualities, and are successfully grown in other regions that are more prosperous in terms of climate. According to experts, "Kotovskie varieties" are superior in quality to many popular apple varieties, and in terms of vitamin content they are far ahead of apple varieties grown in the southern regions.
